Our elevation ranges from less than 7,000 feet above sea level to more than 14,000 feet above sea level, with dry, cool air and considerably less oxygen than lower elevations. Be aware that your body will go through physiological changes when you visit Summit County. Shortness of breath, headaches, nausea, loss of appetite and insomnia are common symptoms of High Altitude Sickness and should disappear within the first few days of your stay. If these symtptoms persist, seek medical advice.
There are ways to prepare for the high altitude that will help with the adjustment:
- Drink three to four times more water than usual
- Reduce consumption of alcohol, caffeine and salty foods.
- Get plenty of rest and don’t over-exert yourself.
- Wear sunscreen and sunglasses or goggles with UV protection, even on cloudy or snowy days.
- Eat foods higher in carbohydrates.
- Dress in layers - seek new outdoor fabrics that repel moisture and retain heat.
