Edwin Carter Museum - The museum is home to hundreds of photos and a remarkable collection of Rocky Mountain flora and fauna carefully catalogued and preserved by the museum’s naturalist founder. Historical Walking Tour - Offered by the Summit Historical Society, the tour includes visits to some of the earliest homes in Breckenridge including the stately residences of the late 1800’s. Keystone - Montezuma

The Old Schoolhouse - Established in 1865, the town of Montezuma (elevation 10,200 ft.) is located east of Keystone Resort and today boasts about 75 residents - a far cry from its peak population of 800 back in the silver mining days. The area’s first school opened in 1880, served Montezuma until 1958 and is still standing today. Tours are conducted by appointment only. 970.453.902

The Frisco Schoolhouse Museum - Located at 120 Main Street in Frisco’s Historical Park. The museum offers information about the earliest days of mining and the town’s first settlers. The building was originally a one-room schoolhouse.

Historical Walking Tour - Included in this self-guided tour is Frisco’s Historical Park - which offers a look at ten historic buildings,including the towns original 1881 jail, a log chapel and recreated trapper’s cabin. The tour originates at the Schoolhouse Museum. 970.668.3428.

Dillon - Lake Dillon Area

The Dillon Dam - The original town of Dillon is impossible to tour these days, as it now lies 250 feet under water beneath the Dillon Reservoir. First settled in the late 1870’s, the tiny town was clustered around the scenic confluence of the Snake, Ten Mile and Blue Rivers. But the entire town was forced to move in 1960 when construction began on the Dillon Dam - an ambitious project that created a lake out of the three rivers and now suppplies water to the city of Denver.

Summit Historical Museum, located at 403 LaBonte Street. The building was originally a school house built in 1883, and then became a church in 1910 when the new school was built.

Dillon Historic Tour of Homes - Visit the original Dillon Town Hall and the summit Historical Museum. Other buildings saved from the original town site include the Arapahoe Cafe and Pub on Lake Dillon Drive, and the Historic Mint Restaurant and the Old Dillon Inn on Highway 6 in Silverthorne. 970.453.9022

Elevation - Rare Air and You

Our elevation ranges from less than 7,000 feet above sea level to more than 14,000 feet above sea level, with dry, cool air and considerably less oxygen than lower elevations. Be aware that your body will go through physiological changes when you visit Summit County. Shortness of breath, headaches, nausea, loss of appetite and insomnia are common symptoms of High Altitude Sickness and should disappear within the first few days of your stay. If these symtptoms persist, seek medical advice.
There are ways to prepare for the high altitude that will help with the adjustment:
*Drink three to four times more water than usual
*Reduce consumption of alcohol, caffeine and salty foods.
*Get plenty of rest and don’t over-exert yourself.
*Wear sunscreen and sunglasses or goggles with UV protection, even on cloudy or snowy days.
*Eat foods higher in carbohydrates.
*Dress in layers - seek new outdoor fabrics that repel maisture and retain heat.

Biking

More than 40 miles of paved path takes bikers from Breckenridge to Frisco, along the shoreline of Dillon Reservoir (Lake Dillon), across the dam, sown the hill to Silverthorne, from Frisco to Copper Mountain and all the way to Vail, if you so desire.

For off-road enthusiasts, hundreds of miles of trails and abandoned mining roads provide a great getaway into the Summit County backcountry. You can even take a chairlift up the ski mountains and take a leisurely green run (or a thrilling black run) down.

Also look for exciting bike races through out the summer, including road biking, mountain biking and cyclo-cross events.

Summit Stage buses are equipped with bike racks for daytime lifts around the country. Bike rentals are plentiful and include water bottles and helmets.

Golf is an adventure in the high country. The natural surroundings add panoramic mountain views, streams and wetlands to the course environs. Playing at altitude allow the ball to soar further and faster than usual, and you may even encounter wildlife on the course, from beaver to elk and moose.

The golfing season in Summit County runs from late spring to early fall (mid-May through mid-October). Here are Summit County’s five excellent courses.

Breckenridge Golf Club, 970.453.9104

The county’s only 27-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed municipal course. Nine additional holes were opened in summer 2001. The three”nines” blend with the landscape and include open terrain, streams, beaver ponds, native grasses and wetland areas and forsted terrain. Twelve of the holes feature water, and there are 48 bunkers on 16 holes. The course has been rated among the Top 10 in difficulty in Colorado from its professional tees. Call inadvance for tee times. The Ranch Course features a traditional Scottish “linksland” design on the front nine and a traditional mountain valley layout on the back nine. This 72-par course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. At the center of ,the course is the award-winning Ranch restaurant.
