Golf

Golf is an adventure in the high country. The natural surroundings add panoramic mountain views, streams and wetlands to the course environs. Playing at altitude allow the ball to soar further and faster than usual, and you may even encounter wildlife on the course, from beaver to elk and moose.

The golfing season in Summit County runs from late spring to early fall (mid-May through mid-October). Here are Summit County's five excellent courses.

Breckenridge Golf Club, 970.453.9104
The county's only 27-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed municipal course. Nine additional holes were opened in summer 2001. The three"nines" blend with the landscape and include open terrain, streams, beaver ponds, native grasses and wetland areas and forsted terrain. Twelve of the holes feature water, and there are 48 bunkers on 16 holes. The course has been rated among the Top 10 in difficulty in Colorado from its professional tees.

Call inadvance for tee times. Reserved tee times five or more days in advance are only available with lodging reservation through Breckenridge. Central Reservations, 877.234.3989

Keystone Ranch Golf Course and The River Course at Keystone, 970.496.4250 or 970.496.4444, www.keystoneresort.com
The Ranch Course features a traditional Scottish "linksland" design on the front nine and a traditional mountain valley layout on the back nine. The AAA Four-Diamond restaurant acts as the clubhouse during theday and serves gourmet meals and golf lunches in an historic log homestead.

The River Course is Keystone's newest, 18-hole course. This 71-par course was designed by Dana Fry and Michael Hurdzan, Ph.D., landscape arhitects renowned for their environmentally sensitive golf course design. The course features a 194-foot drop from the tee to green on the par-4, 509 yard 16th hole and finishes with a challenging navigation through 12 bunkers on the scenic 18th hole.
